Hitting the Tracks the Canadian Way: Cross Country Skiing in Lake Louise
Feel the swoosh of the crisp snow beneath your feet as you glide along snowy ridges and through silent forests. Don't forget to take in the astounding beauty of the Rocky Mountains as you catch your breath!
Cross country skiing is perfect for active families and outdoor-loving couples. The trails range from flat forest loops for beginners to challenging mountain climbs for seasoned skiers.
The ski season typically runs from late November through early April. January and February offer the most consistent powder and crisp mountain air. We recommend booking your stay 2 to 4 months in advance for peak winter weekends.
Where to Find the Best Nordic Tracks in Lake Louise
Whether you are looking for a gentle valley glide or a heart-pumping mountain climb, these five trails are the local favorites.
1. The Tramline Trail: The Ski from the Door Route
- Distance: 4.8 km (one way)
- Difficulty: Moderate due to the steady 3% incline.
- The Inside Scoop: This is the most convenient trail for our guests. Walk just 200 meters from our front door to the trailhead near the train tracks. You’ll climb through a thick forest from the Village up to the Lake Louise Lakeshore.
Insider Tip: The climb up is a great workout, but the return trip is the real prize. It’s a fast, fun glide all the way back down to the Lodge.
2. Lake Louise Shoreline: The Postcard Glide
- Distance: 4 km (round trip)
- Difficulty: Easy / Beginner.
- The Inside Scoop: If you want those iconic views of the Victoria Glacier without the elevation gain, this is your trail. It’s wide, perfectly flat, and runs right along the edge of the frozen lake.
- Logistics Note: This trail gets busy with walkers near the Chateau. Head out before 10:00 AM for the freshest tracks and the best photography lighting.
3. Moraine Lake Road: The Early Season Reliable
- Distance: Up to 15 km (round trip)
- Difficulty: Moderate.
- The Inside Scoop: Because this road is closed to vehicles in winter, it becomes a wide, world-class ski track. It’s often the first trail in the Rockies to be groomed each season. The first 3 km are a steady uphill, but it levels out for a scenic cruise toward the Consolation Valley.
- Safety Warning: Do not ski past the End of Grooming sign at the 8 km mark. The road enters hazardous avalanche terrain beyond that point.
4. The Bow River Loop: The Sunset Stroll
- Distance: 7 km loop
- Difficulty: Easy.
- The Inside Scoop: This trail winds along the banks of the Bow River right in the Village. It’s mostly flat with a few small dips to keep it interesting. It’s the perfect place to go if the wind is howling up at the lake, as the trees provide excellent shelter.
- After-Ski Strategy: This is a great pre-dinner ski. You can finish your loop and be back at the Lodge in time for a soak in the hot tub before heading to a local restaurant.
5. The Great Divide / Old 1A: The Continental Classic
- Distance: 20 km (round trip)
- Difficulty: Easy to Moderate.
- The Inside Scoop: Located a short 10-minute drive from the Lodge toward the BC border, this trail follows the old highway. It is wide enough for both classic and skate skiing. You’ll eventually reach the Continental Divide arch; the border between Alberta and British Columbia.
- Conditions Tip: Because of its high elevation, this trail often has the best snow quality in late March when the lower valley trails start to soften.
Essential Lake Louise Skiing Guide: Best Times, Weather & Safety
If you are new to the sport or the mountains, here are some recommendations from our team. Everyone is sure to enjoy their time gliding through the snow.
Best Temperature: Success starts with temperatures below 0°C. If it is below -10°C, make sure to bundle up and bring hand warmers. Mountain air is dry. We suggest taking breaks to stay warm and hydrated.
Duration: Most guests spend between 1 and 4 hours on the trails.
What to Bring: Snacks, water, sunscreen, sunglasses and and your ski gear.
Dress for the Cold: Wear moisture-wicking base layers and avoid cotton. Use a warm mid-layer and a windproof outer shell. Do not forget a toque and warm gloves. Even though you might be adventuring out in the cold, cross country skiing is an active sport that requires consistent physical endurance. It's a great work out! Layers are helpful.
Safety First: Stick to the maintained areas for the best conditions. Always check the weather report at our front desk before you head out.
