How to Capture Great Photos
If you are into cross country skiing or snowshoeing Moraine Lake is an excellent spot to shoot some photos, often serene and peaceful compared to other times of the year when more visitors are here. Keep in mind that not all roads are accessible in the winter months and hiking is very limited. Lake Louise, Johnston's Canyon and the Bow Valley Parkway offer some exciting winter scenes, often including wildlife. Dress warm and be prepared as some of the clearest days are also the coldest.

Insider Travel Tips from the Front Desk at Mountaineer Lodge
Our friendly Front Desk Team is happy to chat with you about attractions and adventures. They can give you all the details from a local's perspective.
Here are a few of their commonly shared expert tips:
The Village Advantage: Our hotel is one of the few accommodation options actually located in the lower Lake Louise Village. This means you can walk from the hotel parking lot across Lake Louise Drive, right over to Samson Mall in under four minutes. Guests go here to grab a delicious pastry from Laggan's Bakery or the Trailhead Cafe, groceries from the Village Market, and gear rentals from Wilson Mountain Sports. Explore Lake Louise
Park & Ride: Parking at the lakeshore fills up before sunrise in peak season. We recommend taking the Lake Louise Ski Shuttle or the Parks Canada shuttles, which are very easy to access from our location.
Scenic Route: If you are heading to Banff or Johnston Canyon, take the Bow Valley Parkway (1A) instead of the main highway. It takes about 10 minutes longer, but you right by Morant's Curve and the chances of seeing a moose are much higher!
Winter Gear: Don't pack bulky skis and boots if you don't want to. Wilson Mountain Sports is right across the street and our guests often get quick service there for high-quality rentals. Packages range from $39 to $79/day.
Questions Our Guests Often Ask
The lake usually freezes solid by mid-December and thaws in March or April. If you want to skate on the cleared rink with the ice sculptures, February is your best bet for great ice conditions.
Not at all! Mountaineer Lodge is a free ski shuttle pick-up point. It is a quick and easy 8 minute ride that drops you right at the base of the Lake Louise Ski Resort.
Layers are your best friend. Start with a warm base, add a fleece, and top it with a warm, windproof jacket (parka). Mittens or gloves are a must and a toque (beanie) is recommended to keep your body head in. Don't forget wool socks and sturdy boots. We always suggest ice cleats for walking on packed trails.
Lake Louise average temperatures in winter range from about -3° C to -18 °C (26.2 °F - 0.4 °F).
We can get much colder though, even down to -35° C (-31° F).Physically, this feels like stepping into a giant, dry freezer; the cold is so sharp it actually tingles inside your nose when you breathe, and the snow is a dry, light powder that feels like cold sand and won't soak through your clothes like rain does.
