Where to Find the Best Ice in Lake Louise, Canada

Essential Lake Louise Skating Guide: Best Times, Weather & Safety
If you're new to skating or adventures in the mountains during winter, here are some recommendations from our team for planning a successful day of skating on Lake Louise. Whether it's your first time getting out onto the ice or you're an experienced ice dancer, everyone is sure to enjoy their time gliding on Lake Louise.
Best Temperature: If the temperature is below 0°C (32°F), you're set up for success. Temperatures below about -10°C (14°F) are still reasonable for a short time (about 30-45 minutes for kids), but make sure to bundle up and bring hand warmers, boot warmers, and hot chocolate to ensure everyone stays toasty. Usually, there is a fire burning next to the lake for skaters to warm up for a few minutes.
Duration: Most guests spend up to 1–2 hours on the ice before returning to the Village for lunch or a soak in the steam room.
What to Bring: Snacks, water, your skates and hockey stick (optional).
Dress for the Cold: Mountain air is dry and biting. Wear moisture-wicking base layers (avoid cotton!), a warm mid-layer, and a windproof outer shell. Don’t forget a toque (beanie) and warm gloves. Kids should wear snow pants, and helmets are highly recommended.
Safety First: Stick to the maintained area for the smoothest ice. If you see a maintenance worker out, give them plenty of space; they're working hard to keep that smooth, postcard finish.
Where to Rent Ice Skates in Lake Louise Village
If you didn't bring your own skates, we suggest visiting Wilson Mountain Sports. They are located in the Village right near our lodge. You can rent skates and a hockey stick there before heading up to the lake. It is often more relaxed than the rental shops at the shoreline.
Cost: Skates $19/day | Hockey Stick: $7/day
Hours: 8 am to 7 pm every day
Phone: 403.522.3636
Address: Samson Mall, A, 101 Lake Louise Dr
